Anatomy | The Inguinal Ligament & Inguinal Canal - YouTube

The inguinal canal is a passage in the lower abdominal wall that allows structures to pass from the abdomen into the scrotum or labia majora. It contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, and the spermatic cord in males.

The inguinal canal is formed during fetal development as the testes descend from the abdomen into the scrotum.
Anatomy of the inguinal canal:
•It is located in the lower abdomen slightly above the inguinal ligament.
•It measures about 4 cm long and runs obliquely in an inferomedial direction.
•The canal allows for the passage of the spermatic cord and ilioinguinal nerve in males, and the round ligament of the uterus in females.
•The canal has an abdominal wall entrance called the deep inguinal ring, and an exit called the superficial inguinal ring.
•The deep inguinal ring is located just lateral to the inferior epigastric vessels. It marks the entry into the inguinal canal from the abdomen.
•The superficial inguinal ring marks the exit of the inguinal canal, where it opens into the scrotum/labia majora. It is located just above the pubic tubercle.
•The anterior and posterior walls of the inguinal canal are formed by the external oblique aponeurosis and the transversus abdominis aponeurosis respectively.
•The inguinal ligament forms the inferior boundary while the arching fibers of the internal oblique muscles form the superior boundary. The deep and superficial inguinal rings act as entrances and exits to the inguinal canal, while the muscles and connective tissue surrounding the canal form its walls and boundaries. Understanding the anatomy of the inguinal canal is important for diagnosis and treatment of inguinal hernias.

Notes:•The deep inguinal ring is the internal entrance, at the junction of the transversus abdominis and internal oblique muscles.
•The superficial inguinal ring is the external exit, located above the pubic tubercle in the external oblique aponeurosis.
•The inguinal canal allows passage of spermatic cord and ilioinguinal nerve in males, and the round ligament of the uterus in females.
•Inguinal hernias occur when abdominal contents pass through the deep/superficial inguinal rings and enter the inguinal canal.
