FAQ

Is Medical Science an easy optional for CSE aspirants?

Well, Medical Science is a very suitable optional for graduates and post graduates from Medical background. The optional can be a very rewarding one if prepared thoroughly in a planned manner.

Why Medical Science is a rewarding optional subject?

Medical Science is a unique optional subject for CSE preparation, especially for Medical graduates. The optional are decided based on few key aspects. Ability to fetch marks is a very important one. Another would be the aspirant’s interest. Also, considered is the variation in subject specific results each year. Even though, these are the basic tenets to fix your optional, there is a fourth factor, which is almost invisible to the aspirant at the first sight. This is, the “language of the optional“. Now, by language of the optional, I am not referring to the language in which you write the exam, but the way language is used to present the answer.

Why is "language of the optional" important?

In Medical Science, answers are written in a direct non-subjective manner. This will reduce the variability in marks for similar content. To illustrate, if the question is, what are the commom premalignant lesions of oral cavity?, two candidates who have a reasonable knowledge about the common premalignant conditions will fetch the same marks. This also assures a minimum mark for every attempted question. The same assurance is not available with many other optional subjects. In other optional subjects like, History, Sociology, Political Science and Anthropology, the “language of the optional” creates unnecessary subjectivity.

Are there any other advantages in selecting Medical Science as an optional?

Most questions from, Medical Science could be made interesting by the use of simple diagrams. This will fetch extra marks. If the candidate is prepared for this, she/he can use diagrams to score more. This option is not available to other Optional as it is available for Medical Science.

How to prepare for the Medical Science optional?

Organise the study materials- Texts and notes if you have any. Adopt a strategy based on previous question papers since 8-10 years. Learn those topics first.

Test yourself by joining a well planned test series. Follow through till the end. Always remember that, this is a long game. But we doctors are the masters of that. I will be speaking for any other doctor too, when it is said that ‘as doctors we have the capacity to persevere and continuously prepare compared to most other professional courses’.

Is it necessary to attempt a test series?

It is strongly advised that every aspirant must join a well planned and streamlined test series. This will keep your preparation on target. As a general nature; aspirants prepare less important topics extensively, while keeping out core topics to a later stage. Many end up finding that, they have not kept enough time for this, mostly towards the final exam time. A test series will avoid this, as the aspirant is compelled to read about the most relevant topics via the test questions.

What are the characteristics of a good Test series?

  1. It should follow CSE syllabus.
  2. It should be regular but not tiresome
  3. Ease of writing the test and uploading the papers will save a lot of time.
  4. Valuation should happen timely and by evaluators who have thorough knowledge about the way CSE questions are answered.
  5. The cost of the Test should be reasonable.
