The Rule of Nine is a quick way to estimate the percentage of total body surface area (TBSA) burned in burn victims. It divides the body into sections of 9% or 18%:
– Head and each arm – 9%
– Front chest and abdomen – 18%
– Upper back – 18%
– Lower back and buttocks – 18%
– Front of each leg – 18%
– Back of each leg – 18%
This allows first responders and clinicians to rapidly calculate approximate TBSA burned and determine burn severity. First degree burns affecting <10% TBSA are minor. Second/third degree burns affecting >20% TBSA are major and can be life-threatening due to fluid loss, electrolyte abnormalities, infection, and other complications. The Rule of Nine guides initial fluid resuscitation volumes before definitive TBSA can be determined. It provides critical information for burn management and prognosis.
