The toxic effects of Datura are due to anticholinergic compounds like atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine. Ingestion of any part of the plant can cause a rapid onset of delirium often accompanied by intense hallucinations. Other major effects include increased heart rate, dangerously high body temperature, urinary retention, seizures, and potentially fatal respiratory depression. Supportive care and benzodiazepines may be used until the toxins are metabolized.
